Some say greed for wealth and power is the root cause of corruption. Some say there are four paths that lead to corruption: people choose corrupt practices willingly, out of hate, fear, or misapprehension.
No matter what the answer may be, we must not let graft hijack democracy.
Corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law, leads to violations of human rights, distorts markets, erodes the quality of life, and allows organized crime, terrorism, and other threats to human security to thrive.
It is an insidious plague that has a wide range of corrosive effects on societies.
It has been seen that corruption becomes rife in societies during periods of inefficient administration. During such times, the more power and rights one has, the easier it is to become rich through corruption and bribery. Although corruption has always been considered a plague to human civilization, the phenomenon has traditionally been wildly rampant in societies. Due to such wrongful practices, the country has been caught in the poverty trap.
While those who resort to corruption and bribery may become rich and popular, their actions exert an adverse influence on the morality and cultural traditions of society.
Corruption and bribery reduce income and government revenues; they increase costs, thereby undermining fair competition; distort policy, and allow priorities to be determined by personal interests; breed disloyalty in public institutions; divert resources from where they are needed the most; reduce productivity, thereby demotivating those who receive unfair rewards; and, destroy cultures at all levels.
When the government elected by the people took office, it prioritized fighting corruption and bribery.
The new government has enforced strict rules for the authorities, and to ensure those who have power do not misuse their position and rights for their own interest. The government has taken a balanced approach in the fight against corruption, and is also trying to take serious action against those found committing malpractices.
Due to the action taken against corrupt officials, the public is now becoming more and more aware of the scourge of corruption. By praising honesty and denouncing dishonesty in societies, people can be spurred towards morality and cultural values.
As we strive towards democracy in this transitional period, there is a better chance of us being exposed, if we are corrupt.
We are confident that with the participation of the people who thoroughly understand the difference between good and evil, we can build an economic system with dignity.
