Death toll in Cameroon's residential building collapse rises to 33

The death toll rose to 33 in a collapsed residential building in Cameroon's commercial hub of Douala after more bodies were retrieved from under the debris Sunday night, authorities said Monday.

About 54 people who were injured in the tragedy are receiving medical attention, said Cameroonian Minister of Housing and Urban Development Celestine Ketcha Courtes who visited the site of the accident Monday morning.

"Five people are in critical condition. We are doing all we can to rescue more people," Courtes told reporters.

Rescue workers were still searching for missing persons under the rubble.

The four-story building collapsed early Sunday in the Ndogbong neighborhood of the city, and it was still unclear what caused the collapse.
