A landslide induced by torrential rains struck a village in Paung Township of Mon State yesterday, with 10 persons reportedly dead and 27 injured so far, according to the local authorities.
Mon State Chief Minister Dr Aye Zan and officials inspected the conditions at the scene and directed that soil and debris be removed within a day with the use of all machinery in the township.
The landslide also wreaked havoc between the 184/5 and 184/6 mileposts on the Yangon-Mawlamyine Road.
Following the landslide, three backhoes and two bulldozers were brought in to clear soil and debris, and their task is expected to be complete by Friday evening.
Before inspecting the site affected by the deadly landslide, the chief minister and his party visited temporary relief camps where flood-victims from low-lying areas of Mawlayine are being sheltered and spoke words of encouragement to them.
Dr Aye Zan also met with concerned officials from the local disaster management committee and made arrangements for providing aid to the flood victims.
The disaster destroyed 14 houses and some residents are still missing at Thanbyu Ward of Thalphyuline village in Paung Township. Some 85 members of local fire stations from Thaton, Paung, Bilin and Kyaikto, together with 35 rescue persons, evacuated the people at the site. The rescue works were joined by 10 police members of Mon state in searching for the missing people in flood.—MNA(Translated by TTN)
