A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck in Iran on Sunday morning, killing at least nine people, including children in neighboring Turkey.

The US Geological Survey says the quake centered in Iran's West Azerbaijan province which shares a border with Turkey. It had a depth of 6.4 kilometers.

Turkish interior minister Suleyman Soylu said nine people, including at least four children, died and 37 others were injured.

Many houses made of bricks collapsed in the eastern Turkish province of Van.

Video footage shows people trying to rescue those trapped under collapsed buildings in the snow.

Iran's state-run news agency reports 75 people have been injured in the country.

The regions have been hit hard by quakes in the past.

In 2012 a powerful earthquake hit northwestern Iran, killing more than 300 people.

Last month, a magnitude 6.7 quake struck in eastern Turkey, leaving 41 people dead.
