Ecuador on Monday said a total of 110,092 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) since the start of the outbreak here.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the death toll from COVID-19 has reached 10,576.

That figure "is the sum" of fatalities confirmed to have been caused by the virus and deaths likely caused by the virus, but lacking scientific confirmation, the ministry said.

Officials also decided to no longer report cases of infection confirmed by rapid tests, as they had been doing since the first case was detected on Feb. 29.

"Rapid tests assess the presence of antibodies or defenses against the novel coronavirus and are not used to diagnose the disease," the ministry argued.

So far 91,242 patients have recovered from the disease.
