Rising feedstuff costs in poultry farming drove egg production costs and increased egg prices. The price of broken rice, mainly used in feed processing, jumped to K45,000 per sack this year.
Integrated chicken and fish farming is ordinary in the country, whereas the free-range system is fostered for ducks. The integrated farms save some costs, yet farmers must focus on health and safety measures.
Free-range farming is a labour-intensive system to manage free-range ducks. This system saves some feed costs.
Poultry chicken farming attracts the attention of farmers rather than duck farming. Duck farming was mostly found in the Kayan, Thanetpin and Thakala areas before the 2020s. Locals from delta regions (Pyapon and Latputta districts) are executing this business.
Duck eggs supplied from the Mawlamyine area fetch higher prices in the Yangon market. Eggs are in high demand in the market. The price of duck egg (K300-400) is over K100 higher than that of chicken egg (K230-300).
At present, egg production costs over K5,000 per viss. The lack of border demand cut egg prices for now, making egg farmers hit financially.
Egg consumption might reduce some food costs when meat prices are surging, Daw Thiri, a housewife, told the Global New Light of Myanmar. — TWA/KK
