England enters a second national lockdown

The British government has enforced another lockdown in England to curb the spread of the coronavirus as the UK has seen a rapid rise in new cases and deaths.

The national restrictions came into force on Thursday and will be in place through December 2.

During this period, people have to stay home except for shopping for daily necessities and other specified activities. Retailors, except for essential ones such as supermarkets and pharmacies, are banned from opening. Restaurants can only provide take-away and delivery services.

Ahead of the lockdown, many people were seen dining with friends and shopping in central London even though it was a weekday.

A woman who bought a winter coat said she can probably endure restrictions for a month but is not sure if they are in place longer.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has repeatedly said that the latest measures should end in a month to mitigate the impact on the economy.

A total of 492 people died from the virus in the country on Wednesday. That's the highest level since May.
