When it comes to reforms for improving the education system to bring it on par with other countries, the quality of teachers is crucial.
In this globally and digitally interconnected era, those who learn sustainably succeed.
All learners and educators need to upgrade their skills and knowledge, from cradle to career, to overcome challenges and grab opportunities offered by today’s world.
To upgrade our education system, the Union Government is implementing the National Education Strategy Plan 2016-2021. To meet the goal set under the plan, teachers need to acquire 21st century skills themselves and cultivate these skills among their students.
Why? The driving force for the 21st century is the intellectual capital of the citizens. These 21st-century skills are more important for our youths now than ever before.
They not only provide a framework for successful learning in the classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where change is a constant and learning never stops.
Besides, in the 21st century world, our teachers should prepare our students to acquire soft skills, such as understanding diversity and equality, paying heed to democratic norms and human rights, and develop capabilities which can help promote the literature, culture, language, customs, and heritage of our ethnic people.
Only then, they will become good citizens who are civically engaged, and have the ability to think critically, solve problems, be creative and innovative, and are digitally literate and globally aware.
Our goal of building a Federal Democratic Union demands good citizens with these skills.
Hence, capable teachers who are moral, free from bias, responsible, and accountable can be considered the backbone of a democracy.
In other words, honesty, accountability, responsibility, and transparency of confident civil servants representing the government are important factors for promoting trust between the government and the people.
Good citizenship is essential for our country, which is rich in natural resources and endowed with the cultural heritage of our ethnic people.
Our teachers and civil servants reflect the image of our country. Hence, they are obliged to uphold our laws and ethics.
At the same time, it is the duty of our teachers to help our ethnic youths become good citizens with strong morals and good character.
