Facebook slapped with 5 billion dollar fine

25 July

The US Federal Trade Commission has announced it slapped social media giant Facebook with a five billion dollar fine for its mishandling of personal information.

The FTC has accused Facebook of violating the privacy of as many as 87 million users. It says the penalty is the largest ever in the area of privacy violation.

Commission Chairman Joe Simons told reporters on Wednesday Facebook betrayed the trust of its users and deceived them about their ability to control their personal information.

He demanded that the company reinforce data protection by forming an independent privacy committee of directors and document reports on its privacy decisions.

Facebook faces the challenge of securing data safely to regain trust from its users.
