Fatal car crash in Australia's Sydney kills 3, including 3-month-old baby

A third person, a three-month-old girl, has died following a two-vehicle crash in Sydney's southwest, local police said on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW), at about 11:20 a.m. local time on Monday, emergency services were called to the Hume Motorway, Menangle Park, and found that a cement truck and a silver SUV crashed in the northbound lanes.

A 34-year-old woman, who was the SUV driver, and a two-year-old boy died at the scene, while the truck driver, a 48-year-old man, was uninjured.

The three-month-old girl was airlifted to a children's hospital in critical condition right after being pulled from the wreckage, but died on Wednesday morning.

NSW Ambulance chief superintendent Mark Gibbs was quoted by local media as saying that based on the circumstances of the scene at that time, it is hard to believe that "anyone could survive the wreckage."

Officers have established a crime scene and continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
