Florida braces for Hurricane Dorian

The US state of Florida has declared a state of emergency as a major hurricane is expected to make landfall early next week.

Officials of the US National Hurricane Center say Hurricane Dorian was moving northwest over the Atlantic Ocean as of 5 p.m., local time, on Thursday.

They predict the hurricane will gain strength and make landfall in Florida early next week as a Category 4 storm, which is ranked as the second most destructive.

US President Donald Trump canceled his weekend trip to Poland, saying his priority is the safety and security of the people in the path of the hurricane.

Florida officials are urging residents to evacuate early. They are also advising people who are unable to leave their homes to store enough food and water for at least one week.
