Peruvian diplomat Javier Perez de Cuellar, who led the United Nations for 10 years, has died. He was 100 years old.

Perez de Cuellar became the 5th UN Secretary-General in 1982. In that year, he became the first UN chief to visit Hiroshima, where he spoke with survivors of the 1945 atomic bombing.

He brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Iraq in 1988 after appealing to both sides to end hostilities.
