Top Lawyers Conduct Two-Day Deepening on International Criminal Law
The Office of the Union Attorney General convened a two-day session on international criminal law for 40 top lawyers from his Office, the Office of the Judge Advocate General, the Ministry of International Cooperation, and the Office of the State Counsellor. Union Minister Kyaw Tint Swe opened the session, in the presence of the Attorney General, the Directors-General of his Office, and other distinguished lawyers of Myanmar.
The occasion for the event was the recent establishment of a Special Unit on International Criminal Justice under the Union Attorney General’s Office, with members from that Office, from the Office of the Judge Advocate General, and the Ministry of International Cooperation. The mandate of the Unit is to strengthen Myanmar’s capacity to investigate and prosecute core international crimes, and to provide expert advise to the Government on international criminal law and justice.
In his remarks, the Union Minister stressed the importance of the Special Unit, as Myanmar needs enhanced domestic capacity in this area. He said that the two-day event was timely also because Myanmar faces a related challenge by The Gambia and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation before the International Court of Justice. He said that Myanmar will prevail in that case, as there was nothing even remotely similar to genocide in Rakhine in 2017.—MNA
