French lawmaker hospitalized with coronavirus

France's National Assembly says one of its members has been hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus.

National Assembly President Richard Ferrand said in a statement on Thursday that a lawmaker and a staff member of the lower house of parliament both have the virus. The statement said the lawmaker is being treated in an intensive care unit.

French media outlets say the legislator is in his or her 60s and a member of the opposition Republicans elected from the Haut-Rhin department in eastern France.

This is believed to be the first case of a French lawmaker becoming infected with the virus.

The coronavirus has killed seven people and sickened at least 423 in France.
