Insurer plans policy to prompt disaster evacuation

An insurance company says it may introduce a policy aimed at encouraging people to evacuate their homes during disasters.

Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance began studying the policy idea after rains and landslides last year in western Japan killed more than 270 people.

Many residents died despite evacuation orders and advisories by local governments.

The company's "evacuation insurance" policy would include transport by taxi or bus when directives are issued. It would also cover the cost of the evacuation.
