Italian interior minister being investigated

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into Interior Minister Matteo Salvini's possible misuse of government aircraft while campaigning for the European Parliament elections.

The Italian media reported on Thursday that Salvini allegedly used state transport to get to campaign events for his right-wing League party ahead of the elections that will start on Thursday of next week.

Salvini is known for his strict anti-immigration policies. He leads the anti-EU orces that are expanding their support in the European Parliament elections.

Salvini, who is also deputy prime minister, has denied the allegations.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the mayor of the northern Italian town of Legnano, who is a member of Salvini's party, was arrested on suspicion of bribery.

Salvini said on Twitter that he knew he would draw strong opposition in his fight against the mafia and businesses that bring illegal immigrants into the country.

He stressed that the latest moves are politically motivated attacks against his activities.
