Japan moves to step up S.Korea export controls

The Japanese government says it may step up export controls on South Korea by removing the country from a list of nations entitled to simplified export procedures.

The Trade Ministry held a period for public comment on the move. The ministry says it received more than 10,000 responses, and a large majority were supportive of taking South Korea off the list.

The move would require exporters to obtain the Ministry's permission on individual shipments for many products.

Exports to countries like China and India already go through this screening. Ministry officials say they will monitor Seoul's reaction, but they plan to take necessary steps to remove South Korea from the list as early as August.
