Japan orders 1.6 million people to evacuate

Japanese airlines have cancelled 579 domestic flights scheduled for Monday due to Typhoon Haishen.


Most of the flights were to depart from or arrive at airports in the Kyushu, Shikoku and Chugoku regions of western Japan.


onday's cancelled flights include 201 at ANA and 171 at Japan Airlines.


Airlines are calling on travelers to check the flight latest information on their websites.


More than 1.6 million people in six prefectures in southwestern Japan have been ordered to evacuate immediately as Typhoon Haishen threatens to hit the region.


Advisories to evacuate promptly were issued to nearly 6 million people in 11 prefectures.


Kyushu Electric Power Company says about 464,000 households in the Kyushu region were without power as of 4 a.m. on Monday.


The utility says work to restore power will begin as soon as possible after the storm passes. Officials are urging residents to stay away from downed power lines.
