The number of foreign visitors to Japan came in at 2,156,900 in August, government data showed Wednesday.
The figure was equivalent to 85.6 percent of the same month of 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak, the Japan National Tourism Organization said.
In the first eight months of the year, foreign visitor arrivals totaled 15.19 million, 68.6 percent of the 2019 level.
Meanwhile, the number of Japanese who traveled overseas last month reached 1.2 million, more than double the figure a year earlier, but still 43.1 percent less than the same month in 2019.
During the January-August period, a total of 5.71 million Japanese traveled overseas, 42.9 percent of the 2019 level before the COVID-19 pandemic, the data showed.
