U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday the United States and Japan will likely make some announcements regarding bilateral trade in August.
"I think we will be announcing some things probably in August that will be very good for both countries," Trump said at a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo, the start of which was open to the media.
Trump said Tokyo and Washington are working on measures to address the "tremendous imbalance" of trade between them.
Trump said he and Abe will focus on military, trade and North Korea issues during their meeting, part of Trump's four-day state visit to Japan through Tuesday.
Abe said the two leaders will also affirm close coordination in ensuring the success of a Group of 20 summit he will host in Osaka, western Japan, in late June.
Abe said he hopes that through Trump's state visit, the two leaders will demonstrate, both at home and abroad, the robust bond between the two countries under their bilateral alliance in Japan's new imperial era of Reiwa that began May 1.
