Japan Airlines says it has started a joint project to look into making fuel from the kind of plastic waste tossed aside by businesses and households. Major trading firm Marubeni is also taking part.

The project wants to churn out fuel by processing plastic waste that is too deteriorated or dirty for recycling.

The firms will conduct a feasibility study and build an experimental facility in Japan.

They say the fuel could be ready by 2025.

Airlines around the world have been under huge pressure to curb pollution. New rules will next year limit carbon dioxide emissions from international flights.
