A delegation from the Joint Ceasefire Monitoring Committee-JMC-Union is attending a training in Aceh, Indonesia, to learn about peace process in Aceh.
During the training, the 10-member delegation led by U Ko Ko Gyi, Vice Chairperson-2 of JMC-Union discussed and shared best practices with resource persons from Aceh that are expert in peace process and conflict resolution.“Indonesia is committed to support national reconciliation and peace process in Myanmar”, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Myanmar, Inspector General of Police Prof. Dr. Iza Fadri said at the official opening of the Training on Peace Process held from 24-25 July 2019 in Aceh, Indonesia. To strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between Indonesia and Myanmar, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Yangon has held a Training on Peace Process. The Training aimed to provide a capacity building platform in the areas of negotiation of peace process, conflict resolution, as well as post-conflict reconstruction program. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Government of Republic of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement on 15 August 2005 in Helsinki, Finland, ended a long-standing armed conflict in Aceh. Since the signing of the MoU, all parties continue to build constructive cooperation for sustainable peace in Aceh.
As a good model of conflict-resolution, the Aceh Peace Process offers invaluable lessons for countries affected by conflict in other regions of the world, including Myanmar. The JMC of Myanmar delegation will also be invited to visit a place of economic empowerment for ex-combatants of Free Aceh Movement, managed by Dr. Muslahuddin Daud in Lamteuba, Aceh Besar.
This activity is fully supported by the Aceh Provincial Government. Representing Acting Governor of Aceh, Special Advisor to Governor on Law and Politic Issues, Drs. H. Rakhmat Fitri HD, MPA gave a speech at the opening ceremony. The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Myanmar expressed hopes that this training will not only equip the participants with the information, but will also strengthen the participant’s role in contributing to the national reconciliation and peace process in Myanmar, for stability, sustainable and inclusive development in Myanmar.—GNLM
