Krosa very close to landfall

A severe tropical storm is expected to make landfall in western Japan on Thursday, bringing torrential rains, violent winds and rough seas.

Weather officials are warning of torrential rains, strong winds and rough seas.

Meteorological Agency officials estimate that Krosa was situated 40 kilometers south-southwest of Uwajima city in Ehime Prefecture at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

The agency says the storm is moving north, producing violent winds.

It says Krosa is nearing Shikoku. It adds that the storm may sweep through western Japan on Thursday.

The officials say violent winds are making their way to some parts of Kyushu and Shikoku.

Rainfall for the 24 hours through Friday morning is expected to reach 800 millimeters in Shikoku, 500 in Tokai and Kinki.

The overall precipitation may exceed 1,200 millimeters in some areas.

Weather officials are warning of landslides in the prefectures of Kochi, Ehime, Tokushima, Nara and Oita.

Krosa is also expected to bring strong winds to the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan.

The advisory, a level-4 alert on a scale of 5, meaning residents should quickly flee to safer ground, is in place for more than 270,000 households, or about 580,000 residents, in those regions.
