Kyaukse, July 15

Kyaukse Township in Mandalay Region planted 45,565 acres of summer sesame during the 2025–2026 fiscal year as part of efforts to achieve local edible oil self-sufficiency. As of today, 44,622 acres have been harvested, producing a total of 702,259 baskets, according to the Township Agriculture Department.

Of the total cultivated area, 32,523 acres were irrigated through the Zawgyi irrigation system, 13,002 acres through the Kintar irrigation system, and 40 acres through the Thit Takkon irrigation system, bringing the total summer sesame cultivation area to 45,565 acres.

To improve productivity, summer sesame growers in Kyaukse Township have adopted the large-frame planting method with technical support from the Township Agriculture Department. According to U Kyaw Myint, a sesame farmer from Sin Kun Village, the system uses less seed, makes field management easier, simplifies irrigation, and has helped raise the average yield to 16.5 baskets per acre, resulting in higher farm income.—Thet Maung (Kyaukse)
