M7.1 quake off New Zealand's Kermadec Islands, no tsunami threat

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has dropped a tsunami warning for the Kermadec Islands region of New Zealand. It says there is no longer a threat of tsunami.

 

The organization says a magnitude 7.1 earthquake hit the region Monday morning.

 

Initially, it reported a magnitude 7.3.

 

The United States Geological Survey says the quake was at a depth of about 49 kilometers.
