Macron orders people in France to stay at home

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced new countrywide restrictions on movement, taking the fight against the coronavirus to a new level.

Macron said in a televised address on Monday night that people should basically stay at home for at least 15 days from Tuesday at noon.

Exceptions will be granted for those who need to buy basic necessities, seek medical care or who cannot conduct telework. People who violate the rules will be punished.

Macron said the country was "at war," and urged people to accept sacrifices to slow down the spread of infections.

The president also said entry into the European Union's free movement Schengen zone will be closed for 30 days from Tuesday at noon.

He said the second round of local elections in France, scheduled for Sunday, will be postponed.
