Malta PM announces resignation

2 December

Malta's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has announced he will resign in January amid police investigations of the murder of a journalist that are engulfing his administration.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was killed by a car bomb in October 2017. She had carried out investigative reporting about political corruption for 30 years.

Four men have been indicted for alleged involvement in the car bombing. A top aide of the prime minister and a cabinet minister were forced to step down after being questioned by police.

Calls for the immediate resignation of Muscat are growing among the Maltese public.

In a televised address to the nation on Sunday, Muscat said he will resign as leader of the governing Labor Party on January 12 to launch the process of selecting a new leader.

He also said that he will step down as prime minister a few days after that.

But the frustration of citizens demanding his immediate resignation could grow as the prime minister plans to stay in power for more than a month.
