Manageable-scale eugenia growers are earning regular income in Kawlin Township, Sagaing Region. The eugenia (locally known as Thabyay) are colourful, sustainable, cost-saving and marketable. So, some of the villages in Kawlin Township are growing the eugenia flowers on their farms or beside their houses on a manageable scale.
There are varieties of eugenia flowers such as Padamyar eugenia, Aung eugenia, Shwe eugenia and Asian eugenia. After growing over six months of Padamyar eugenia, Aung eugenia and Shwe eugenia, the local farmers can cut the branches and sell them at the market. As for the Asian eugenia, the growers can cut the branches after one year and six months. The eugenia trees have to be treated with the use of fertilizers and pesticides half monthly. If the eugenia trees are grown five feet in between, the branches of the trees are spreading and growing beautifully. “We have been growing eugenia for more than 10 years and have 800 trees currently. Every day, we pick up the eugenia and get over 100-170 bans. A handful of eugenia is sold for K500. We are earning over K10,000 per day,” said Daw Swe Swe Oo, a eugenia tree grower from Kyaw Zayar Ward-1.
With the saving of costs for planting, the local growers can make more profits. By growing more than 1,200 eugenia, they can earn around K15,000-K20,000 daily. The eugenia is highly demanded by the market. So, the local people who have extra space of land should grow the eugenia trees on a manageable scale, which can earn the growers the regular income. —Myat Tun Min (Kawlin)
