On the morning of 3 June, basic education schools throughout Myanmar commenced for the 2024-2025 academic year, with students in Mandalay attending and studying peacefully.
Teachers on duty at the school entrance organized students according to their classes and ensured an orderly start to their studies.
Daw Khin May Lwin, Deputy Director of the Office of the Education Officer of Mandalay Region, stated, “In the region, a total of 924,059 students have been enrolled for the academic year, including 764,880 in basic education schools, 73,862 in private schools, and 85,317 in monastic education schools. Although the enrolment week has concluded, we remain open to accepting further enrolments. It is crucial for parents to motivate their children to attend school for their future prospects. We have been preparing for the smooth functioning of schools, not only by arranging classrooms and desks but also by fostering a conducive learning environment.”
During the enrolment week, held from 23 May to 2 June, students were provided with school textbooks, notebooks, and stationery without any charges.
Dr Than Htike Soe, Headmaster of No 16 Basic Education High School, expressed, “This year, our school has admitted over 3,000 students, and enrolment will continue throughout June. We are pleased to see children returning to school. Education is essential for children to attend age-appropriate classes, and we appreciate parents’ active support for education. The state also provides assistance.”
A parent of a student commented, “My child will be in Grade 11 this year. It is beneficial for the school to provide free textbooks and stationery to ensure a comfortable learning environment for children. I support this education system and encourage other parents to send their children to school.”
To ensure students’ safety, the Traffic Police Force are assisting schools near main roads in Mandalay. Additionally, township administration body, fire brigade, and the Myanmar police force are providing security for schools across the respective townships.
For the 2024-2025 academic year, 3,950 basic education schools, 237 private schools, and 306 monastic education schools have been opened in Mandalay Region. — Maung Aye Chan/ TKO
