THE Media Development Department (MDD) celebrated its second anniversary yesterday morning at the Ministry of Information’s combined hall in Nay Pyi Taw.

The event was attended by Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn, Permanent Secretary U Win Kyaw Aung, and senior departmental officials and staff. The ceremony opened with a documentary screening titled ‘MDD for Media Development’.

In his address, Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn noted that MDD was established to support Myanmar’s private media sector, helping it play a meaningful role in national development as the “fourth pillar.” He emphasized the crucial influence of media in shaping public life and highlighted the importance of news and information as essential needs alongside food and shelter. Acknowledging the spread of fake news on digital platforms, he called on media professionals and the public to work together to protect national interests and promote reliable information.

MDD has been fostering strong partnerships with domestic and regional organizations to clarify Myanmar’s situation and provide accurate information nationally and internationally. The Union Minister expressed his hopes for the department’s continued progress, noting its potential to enhance Myanmar’s media sector in the coming years. — MNA/TMT
