Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr Aung Thu and delegation visited the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) during his visit in Norway from 20 to 24 October.
The IMR arranged the visit of Myanmar delegation to promote coordination in fishing industry of the countries, to share knowledge on the management of Norway’s fishing industry and to make closer ties with the major stakeholders in this industry.
On 21 October, the Union Minister and party held talks with officials of IMR, researchers and officers from Norway navy and Norwegian Coast Guard about controlling excess fishing, fish breeding techniques without causing environmental degradations, preventing and controlling possible diseases, marine fishing sector, joint patrol of navy and Coast Guard, and monitoring and controlling on fishing management based on research findings.
The Union Minister also explained conservation of marine resources in Myanmar, good practices in livestock farming, researches on fish resources in collaboration with neighbouring countries, possible using of new marine research vessel RV Dr Fridtjof Nansen under the joint programme of Norway government and FAO for fishery research operations, changing situations in saltwater regions and contamination of microplastics along the coastal areas of Myanmar. They also visited the Fish Market in Bergen.
At 11 am local time on 24 October, the Union Minister and party visited the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), and met with its Executive Director Mr Jon Lomoy to discuss possible research operations with marine research vessel RV Dr Fridtjof Nansen in Myanmar water in 2021, research on continuation of microplastics in water, supports for management based on information, capacity building of staff, improvement of legal frameworks in fishing sector, saltwater livestock, and production of value-added goods.
In that afternoon, they also arrived at Yara International ASA that is a Norwegian chemical company that produces nitrogen fertilizer in Oslo, and is distributing its products to many countries, including Myanmar.
They held talks with Executive Vice President Mr Pablo Barrera Lopez of Yara International ASA about direct sales of fertilizers by using modern technologies and coordination plan of this company with MOALI to establish a digital farming system in the agricultural sector of Myanmar. — MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
