Representatives from the tripartite coalition of the Myanmar Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (MEITI) officially explained its fourth report for 2016-2017 at the Office of Anti-Corruption Commission in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
The multi-stakeholder coalition is comprised with the government, private sector and civil society, and the fourth report was released on 31st March this year.
U Aung Kyi, Chairman of ACC, made an opening remark at the event which was also attended by the secretary and members of the commission, officials from EITI’s Myanmar National Coordinator Office, responsible persons from the state departments and representatives from private sectors and social communities.
The ACC Chairman said that according to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, long-term socio economic development for a community depends on proper conservation of natural resources; strong practices of democratic administration could ensure natural resources national prosperity; the Commission well appreciate the objectives of MEITI and also recognize a huge gap between the underlying procedures and the laws, rules and regulation, procedures and directives.
He also concluded that this problem was caused either by the restrictions at relevant ministries or the insufficient anti-corruption measures.
The functions of MEITI and its fourth report were briefly explained by the experts from MEITI, Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise, Myanma Gems Enterprise, Department of Mines and Myanmar Pearl Enterprise.
Representative of Myanmar EITI tripartite coalition presented their works, and answered to the questions of attendees at the event.
Myanmar was recognized as an EITI candidate country in July 2014 as it began to implement the functions of EITI in transparent initiatives in December 2012.
Published in March this year, the fourth EITI Report covered Myanmar’s extractive sector in 2016 and 2017.—MNA
