Myanmar illegal migrant workers expelled from Thailand

Tachilek, 1 July

Thai immigration officials transferred 46 Myanmar migrant workers—17 men, 26 women and three children—to Myanmar authorities at No.2 Friendship Bridge in Tachilek, Eastern Shan State on 29 June.

The Myanmar migrant workers were deported for crossing the border without proper documents, violating Immigration laws and residing in Thailand illegally. Myanmar authorities accepted seven people and negotiated with officials from the General Administration Department, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population, the Anti-Human Trafficking Police Force and the Caring and Negotiating Committee for Myanmar Citizens in Mae Sai (CNCMC) to dispatch them back home in a safe and secure manner.

The number of migrant workers who were extradited to Myanmar from Thailand so far this year totaled 1,096 including 699 men, 361 women and 36 children.—Phyo Lay (Tachilek)
