THE Myanmar Government is continuing to identify, investigate and deport foreign nationals who entered border areas illegally and were involved in online gambling, online fraud and other criminal activities, in accordance with the law.
Authorities recently detained 12 foreign nationals – five Chinese, two Ethiopians, two Burundians, one Namibian, one Liberian and one Ugandan — who had illegally entered an area near Myawady in Kayin State after transiting through Thailand and neighbouring countries. They are being processed for deportation.
Between 30 January 2025 and 29 June 2026, authorities detained 14,730 foreign nationals who had entered Myawady Township illegally. Of these, 13,553 have been deported via Thailand. Of the remaining 1,177, 662 are being prosecuted under immigration and drug laws, while the other 515 are awaiting transfer to their respective countries.
According to reports, the Government is also cooperating with neighbouring countries, regional partners and international organizations to combat online scam networks, prosecute those responsible and facilitate the repatriation of foreign nationals, including victims of human trafficking. — MNA/MKKS
