9 December

The plane carrying the body of a Japanese doctor and humanitarian worker who was shot dead in Afghanistan arrived at his hometown Fukuoka in southern Japan on Monday morning.

Dr. Tetsu Nakamura died on Wednesday after being ambushed by a group of unidentified gunmen in the city of Jalalabad in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

On Sunday evening, the plane carrying the coffin arrived at Narita Airport, outside Tokyo. Nakamura's widow, Naoko, and his daughter Akiko were onboard the plane.

At Narita airport, relatives and officials of Japan's foreign ministry gathered in front of the coffin. They offered flowers and observed a moment of silence.

The funeral service is scheduled to be held in Fukuoka on Wednesday.
