Sources at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government say 224 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in the Japanese capital on Thursday.
This is the highest-ever daily total for Tokyo. The 206 cases confirmed on April 17 had been the previous highest daily figure.
The number of new cases in the capital had fallen below 100 on Wednesday, for the first time in seven days.
The total number of infections in Tokyo now stands at 7,272.
