New Emperor to open Olympics and Paralympics

24 February

Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito will likely open both the Olympic and Paralympic summer games in Tokyo in 2020 as the new Emperor.

Japan will host the two events after the Crown Prince ascends the throne on May 1st, following Emperor Akihito's abdication on April 30th.

In previous Games held in Japan, the Emperor at the time officially opened the Olympics, while the Crown Prince presided at the opening and closing of the Paralympics.

But officials are making arrangements for the new Emperor to be honorary president of both events and attend their opening ceremonies in the summer of 2020.

His younger brother, Prince Akishino, who will then be first in line to the throne, will likely preside at the closing ceremonies of both the Olympics and Paralympics.

Officials are also looking at the idea of having the new Emperor attend a planned International Olympic Committee session and reception in Tokyo before the Olympics.—NHK
