New York City closes public schools

New York City has decided to close all public schools from Monday to stop the spread of the new coronavirus.


Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the measure at a news conference on Sunday.


About 1,900 schools from kindergarten to high school will remain shut until April 20 at the earliest.


New York City is seeing a daily increase in the number of people testing positive for the coronavirus. 


As of Sunday, 329 people were confirmed infected and five had died.


Multiple states across the United States have announced public school closures including Washington in the Northwest, Ohio in the Midwest, and Maryland in the East.
