New Zealand reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, with the number of active cases in the country being 27, all in managed isolation and quarantine facilities, according to the Ministry of Health.

The first one was a male teenager who arrived in New Zealand from the United States on July 29. He tested positive for COVID-19 as part of routine testing around the third day of his stay in a managed isolation facility in Auckland, and has since been transferred to the quarantine facility.

The second case was a man in his 20s who arrived in New Zealand from Switzerland via Amsterdam and Seoul on July 20. He has been staying at a hotel in Christchurch and firstly tested negative then tested positive at the second routine test, said a ministry statement.

This case again emphasizes the importance of testing returnees in managed isolation facilities twice before they are able to leave the facility, it said.

These cases brought New Zealand's total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 1,217, which is the number reported to the World Health Organization, the statement said, adding there is no one in New Zealand receiving hospital-level care for COVID-19.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said New Zealanders need to continue to be vigilant against the threat of COVID-19 and testing rates need to be increased across the country.
