Ngape, May 29

Farmers in Ngape Township, Minbu District, Magway Region, have harvested 1,044 acres of summer sesame cultivated with water from government and small-scale dams, producing 7,746 baskets at an average yield of 7.42 baskets per acre.

During the summer planting season, a total of 1,447 acres of high-yield sesame varieties, including Samunnet, Sinyadana-12, Sinyadana-3, and black sesame were cultivated. More than 1,000 acres have already been harvested.

According to U Myint Thein, head of the township Department of Agriculture, local farmers mainly grow summer sesame and are being encouraged to harvest on time to prevent yield losses and to store the crop systematically after harvesting.

Rice and sesame are the main summer crops in Ngape Township. To support local edible oil self-sufficiency, officials and agricultural staff are promoting suitable high-yield crop varieties and providing technical assistance to improve productivity.

Expanding oilseed cultivation and increasing yields in the township could help ensure local edible oil sufficiency and contribute to stabilizing commodity prices. — Ma Yu (Ngape)
