North Korea says it will convene a parliamentary session at the end of August.

The country's state-run media reported on Friday that the Supreme People's Assembly will meet in Pyongyang on August 29.

Under North Korea's constitution, the assembly decides the national budget, revisions to the law, and appointments to key government posts. Leader Kim Jong Un delivered a speech at the latest session in April.

Another meeting in August would mean the country has held two sessions in one year for the first time since 2014.

The agenda is still unclear. But with denuclearization talks with the United States stalled, attention is focused on whether the assembly will signal a shift in diplomacy.

Kim has been stepping up his opposition to the ongoing joint US-South Korea military drills, which continue until August 20.

North Korea has repeatedly launched short-range ballistic missiles and other projectiles, with Kim overseeing the process since late July.
