North's projectile launch regrettable

25 July

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya says the projectile launch by North Korea is very regrettable and that Japan is closely monitoring the situation.

South Korea's military says North Korea fired what appear to be two short-range missiles from the eastern city of Wonsan towards the Sea of Japan on Thursday morning.

Iwaya told reporters in Tokyo that the ministry is aware that North Korea fired some kind of projectile and that officials are gathering and analyzing information.

Iwaya said it has already been confirmed that no projectile has entered Japan's territory or its exclusive economic zone.He noted that Japan will continue to closely monitor the North's military activities in cooperation with the United States, South Korea and others.

Iwaya said he can't say anything definite and that the number, the type and the flight distance of the projectiles fired were still being analyzed. He also said that if it was a ballistic missile launch, it would be a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
