THE number of migratory birds in Meiktila this winter is expected to rise compared to the previous years, the bird observers said.
Those winged visitors returning to Lake Meiktila for the winter season will grow. Lake Meiktila water level increased due to the heavy rainfall in the late monsoon period. The Lake is filled with water every three to four years. The increased number of migratory birds often flock to the Lake then, said Ko Zaw Tun, a bird lover from Nantawgon Ward in Meiktila town.
The surrounding near Lake Meiktila is a habitat for migratorybirds every year.
The migratory bird species including Lesser whistling-duck, common coot, Black-winged stilt and Grey-headed swamphen flock to the Lake in winter. Those birds are found in the Lake during mid-November to February-end period.
Every year, migratory birds from Russia, Siberia, and northern China flock to the freshwater lake, where there is abundant food, away from colder regions with frozen lakes and a short food supply that make it difficult for them to survive. — Chantha(Meiktila)/GNLM
