Osaka exits French Open in third round

In tennis, Naomi Osaka's hope to win three straight Grand Slam singles titles has been dashed.

The 21-year-old was hoping to win the French Open, following her victory in the US Open and Australian Open. Osaka came to Roland Garros as the first Japanese player to be top-seeded in a Grand Slam tournament. Osaka, No.1 singles player, faced No.42 Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic in the third round of the French Open on Saturday.

Siniakova is ranked No.1 in doubles. She won the French Open and Wimbledon last year. Osaka played aggressively in the first set but made many unforced errors, losing the set 6-4. In the second set, both players played hard with strong rallies but Osaka fell behind and could not recover.

Osaka lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. After the match, she told reporters that she had a feeling that was different from every other Grand Slam that she had played. She said she was tense, feeling very tired, and dealing with a headache.—NHK
