Over 143.62 tons of illegal timber seized in a week

Forest Department under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation is implementing various methods including the Community Monitoring and Reporting System (CMRS) to put down illegal logging and trading of forest products in cooperation with the people in the country.

 

From February 5 to 11 this year, the authorities confiscated a total of 143.62 tons of illegal timber including 35.07 tons of teak, 6.88 tons of hardwood and 101.66 tons of other types of timber in the country, according to the statistics sent by Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, the State and Regional Forest Departments.

 

In addition, a total of 23 culprits were charged in connection with the cases, along with the seizure of 14 vehicles and machines, according to the Forest Department.—MNA
