Passengers evacuate plane in Beijing due to smoke

Passengers have safely evacuated an Air China plane at Beijing Capital International Airport after smoke was seen onboard.

Boarding procedures were underway on Tuesday for a flight headed to Tokyo's Haneda Airport when smoke started coming out of the cargo compartment.

Footage posted on the Chinese social media platform Weibo shows white plumes coming out of the front and rear of the plane. Part of the plane's body has been charred and distorted.

A Japanese man in his 40s told NHK that he was seated in the back when he heard people shouting in the front. Then he saw the smoke.

The passengers stayed in Beijing overnight and will fly to Haneda on Wednesday.Air China says it is investigating the cause of the incident.
