Pheegyan banana cultivation with underground water tapping increases in NyaungU

Farmers in Letpanchaypaw Village-tract, located in NyaungU Township, report an increase in the cultivation of Pheegyan bananas, aided by an underground water tapping system.

In NyaungU Township, farmers typically cultivate Pheegyan bananas during the Myanmar months of Tabaung and Tagu. According to banana grower U Aye Ko, most farmers prefer cultivating Pheegyan bananas rather than Rakhine bananas due to the higher demand in domestic market and high price of the former.

Some growers plant one basal shoot of banana plant per pit, while others opt for two basal shoots per pit, with harvest typically occurring after ten or eleven months. Buyers from NyaungU, Pakkoku, and Kyaukpadaung townships visit the villages to purchase Pheegyan bananas, which fetch K1,500 per bunch. — Dipa Linn/ TMT
