Plane crash kills 24 in DR Congo

25 November

The BBC reports that at least 24 people have died after a propeller plane crashed into a residential area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The BBC says the plane crashed and exploded on Sunday shortly after taking off from an airport in the eastern city of Goma.

Footage taken of the site shows white smoke rising from the fuselage that crashed onto a building and many people gathering around it.

The network quotes an official as saying that the plane was carrying 17 passengers and two crewmembers, and that the death toll includes some people on the ground.

The twin-engine Dornier-228 aircraft was heading to the town of Beni about 350 kilometers away.

Poor maintenance has caused a number of recent aircraft accidents in the country.
