Portugal declares state of emergency

The Portuguese government has declared a state of emergency for the entire country to combat the new coronavirus.

The government on Thursday instructed shops to suspend operations with the exception of stores selling daily necessities. It also asked people to stay home.

Portugal had confirmed a total of 785 infections and three deaths from the virus as of Thursday.

The country has already banned transit through the border with Spain, with the exception of goods and cross-border commuters.
