Protesters surround Hong Kong legislature building

11 June

Protesters in Hong Kong have gathered around the legislature building as lawmakers prepare to debate a bill that would allow criminal suspects to be sent to mainland China for trial.

Hong Kong's Legislative Council will start deliberations on the extradition bill on Wednesday. The final vote is expected to be held on June 20.

Thousands of people surrounded the legislature building late on Tuesday night. They held up placards and sang songs to show their opposition to the bill. The protest follows a major rally on Sunday. The organizers say over one million people took part in that demonstration.

Many police officers have been deployed in the area. They asked people at a nearby subway station to show their ID cards and searched their bags.

One man said he is very disappointed that the Hong Kong government is still trying to push ahead with the bill. He said he will continue his protest until the last moment to change the government's attitude. Pro-democracy groups are planning to hold rallies on Wednesday morning. The demonstrations are likely to continue until the final vote.
